I felt the same way about Chabon's "The Yiddish Policemen's Union". It took me a while to "get" how I was supposed to be reading it, and I enjoyed it much more once I unlocked that door of perception.
Oh, I'm so pleased to hear you're reading IJ. Wish I were reading it again for the first time.
I get the Sci-Fi classification. Vonnegut was writing sci-fi, even when he wasn't. I think Wallace is moving the ball down the field in the same direction.
