Post Script: As is typical with Smith Corona serial numbers, I've had a problem dating this machine. Perhaps the Typosphere can be of assistance here. The serial number is: V1A042xx

Hi Joe,
I stand to be corrected, but I think that:
V=Duco black
1A=Jan/Feb 1930
042XX is the s/n
Unless 1930 sales started slowly, I'd lean towards January.
S.L. Johnson may shed more light.
Leading "V" stands for the black DUCO paint job, "1A" designates Jan 1930.
Very nice photo of your Corona! And a gorgeous typeface. You may read my german typecast with english translation here. Mine has the number V2AO8524, and small bar to press the paper on the platen, that looks more advanced than yours, so I think yours might be pre-1930.
