The Forest Grove / McMinnville / Salem route is much nicer than I-5. Even in the rain, the lush farmland, stands of Douglas fir and rolling hills are so beautiful. I grew up in Oregon and can say with confidence that there is no finer place to be in late summer. Hope the roads are open and you can get to Crater Lake tomorrow.
You'd make a darn good reporter, Joe - perhaps a travel reporter? :D
