I grew up in Oakland and attended UC Berkeley. Since I left 30 years ago, the Bay Area has certainly become more frantic, expensive, and exhausting. There is a kind of mandatory epicureanism, and the Silicon Valley "culture" tends to make things slick and commercial. That said, it is still a beautiful place and there are many who find ways to live in a more peaceful and individual way, avoiding the mainstream.

Oakland sounds like a place to visit on my next trip to California. Seems it has more going for it than I thought.
